Tips & Tricks
Chill the Dough.
Allow the dough to chill in the refrigerator for at least 3 hours (or overnight). This helps the cookie dough become nice and firm, so it doesn't spread too much during baking.
Don't skimp on the powdered sugar.
Be generous when coating the cookies in the confectioner's sugar. You want them to look like little snowballs!
Make it dairy free.
Swap the unsalted butter for coconut oil and replace the milk with any plant based milk, for a dairy free version. Or check out all my favorite vegan Christmas cookies here.
Variations
Add even more hazelnut flavor.
For a more intense flavor, you could add a teaspoon of hazelnut extract to the cookie dough, in addition to the chopped hazelnuts.
Use milk chocolate.
Replace the dark chocolate with milk chocolate for a sweeter variation.
Swap the nuts.
Swap the hazelnuts for almonds or pecans for a new spin on the same recipe.
Add coffee flavor.
Incorporate a few tablespoons of instant espresso for a chocolate-coffee hazelnut cookie.
Add cinnamon sugar.
Sprinkle the tops of the cookies with cinnamon and sugar before baking for an extra layer of sweetness.
