Published: Aug 30, 2018 · by Nicole · Updated: Jul 30, 2021 · This post may contain affiliate links.

If you are vegetarian or vegan, you may be worried about an upcoming visit to the land of meat. Don’t be. Though Texas is renowned for animal products, its second largest city, Houston, is a haven for these little veggie gems. If you don’t believe us, just take a look at these restaurant offerings that will take you far beyond salads.

    Govinda’s Vegetarian Cuisine

Looking for some of the best vegetarian restaurants in Houston? If you’re craving a little bit of India, this buffet may be the answer. It’s open for both lunch and dinner with a wide selection of new favorites such as BBQ Tofu, Saag Paneer, and Paneer Tikka Masala. Using only the freshest ingredients and exotic spices, Govinda’s cuisine offers an assortment of vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options.

And, if you’re craving something special, you can give them a call to discuss your order before you come in. How’s that for special service?

    Caracol Coastal Mexican

Ready for an elegant vegetarian cuisine with a Mexican twist? Caracol is an award-winning restaurant and one of the best vegetarian restaurants in Houston—a must-visit when you’re in the area.

Meaning “snail” in Spanish, the restaurant features unique coastal fare as well as a vegetarian menu. Try the stacked tortilla casserole that is topped with corn truffles and mushrooms. And don't miss the special yellow mole with roasted cauliflower and wild mushrooms!

The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner, as well as brunch on weekends, so make sure to add this restaurant to your itinerary.

    Local Foods

If it’s all about freshness for you, Local Foods may have the answer. Locally sourced ingredients create an intriguing revolving menu that is sure to stimulate your taste buds. With generous operating hours, this restaurant is a great option for any vegetarian. They also have a vegan menu with 5 everyday offerings as well as daily specials.

Check out the quinoa burger or vegan gumbo. And don't worry if you have meat-eating friends in your party. There are a few healthy selections for them, too. This is only one of the many reasons Local Foods is placed among the best vegetarian restaurants in Houston.

    Baba Yega Café

Are you going to be in the Montrose area while in Houston? Try to stop by this cozy café. A local favorite since 1976, this café boasts creative vegetarian and vegan dishes like the vegan and gluten-free Hippie Meatloaf. This special spin on comfort food features a loaf made from quinoa and black beans, along with fresh herbs and veggies.

You may also want to plan on visiting for the Sunday brunch buffet. The locals swear by it. Remember to fill your plate with vegetable frittatas and fruit blintzes, and don’t forget your mimosas! Drop by Baba Yega's for a memorable visit to the Houston area.

    Huynh Restaurant

If you have a craving for some Asian food while in the Houston area, head on down to the strip mall that houses the Huynh Restaurant. This modest Vietnamese eatery is home to all your favorites, along with a decent selection of vegetarian dishes.

Tofu and vegetables abound in the special vegetarian section of the menu. If you can take the heat, try the tofu stir-fry with hot chilies and lemongrass. However, if you prefer milder fare, the crispy egg noodles with mixed veggies and tofu may hit the spot.

    Green Seed Vegan

If you are on a strict vegan or raw diet, the Green Seed Vegan may be the spot for you. Serving bistro-style sandwiches and burgers, complete with raw sides, this is any visiting vegan’s home away from home. All the offerings are 100% vegan and soy-free. There are gluten-free options, too.

Order the bbq jackfruit burger, or get your noodles on with spirals of raw yam, zucchini, and kelp in almond sauce. Don’t forget your side order of cauliflower nuggets and a root brownie for dessert.

    Hobbit Café

Vegetarian hobbits traveling far from the Shire may feel at home with the wide selection at the Hobbit Café. Whether you’re craving a black bean burger, or a spinach and mushroom enchilada, this eatery has an incredible selection of non-meat options. And of course, many of the choices are named after Middle Earth places and characters.

The café also features 15 rotating artisan draft beers for you to discover. Open every day with weekday happy hour specials and weekend brunches, there is no bad time to visit this little café. If you are on the lookout for some of the best vegetarian restaurants in Houston, don’t forget to add this one to your list.

    Doshi House

Is it a coffee house or a restaurant? Doshi House is a chameleon powerhouse that offers freshly roasted coffee and full leaf teas all day long. But they also offer a revolving selection of vegan goodness throughout the day.

Try the vegan pozole on Fridays evenings, or have a grilled veggie panini for lunch. They also offer hearty soups all day, like the Southern Creole or Goan Lentil. When you’re ready to take a break from your busy day, check out this casual little eatery for a quick and healthy bite.

    Aladdin’s Mediterranean Cuisine

Think that Mediterranean food only includes meat options? Think again. This restaurant marries the flavors and styles of Greek and Mediterranean cooking to interesting results.

Check out their different hummus dips, creamy baba ganoush, and roasted veggies. While the rest of the party dines on lamb kabobs, you can enjoy spinach and feta pie or falafel. And salads? With 15 different types, Aladdin’s has you covered.

True, it’s more cafeteria-style than fine dining. But sometimes good food trumps elegant décor.

    Café TH

Ready for some casual, fresh, budget-friendly Asian food? This little café may hit the spot. Start off with vegetarian spring rolls, or jump right in and order the vegan pho. Is there such thing as a vegan pho? At this café there is, and it’s complete with fresh veggies, rice noodles, and tofu served in a naturally flavored, all-vegetable broth.

If pho isn’t your thing, the vegan section of the menu also features dishes such as vegan curry or tofu with lemongrass and garlic sauce. However, if you are desperately craving the infamous Vietnamese sandwich, Café TH has you covered with vegetarian and vegan options. With so many selections to choose from, Café TH truly is one of the best vegetarian restaurants in Houston.
