How to Make Christmas Wreath Cookies
The dough for these Christmas sugar cookies is a new favorite cookie dough for me, because it was so easy to work with.
It rolled easily, without any flour, and kept it's shape well without breaking. Even better, it tasted delicious, with the addition of a few festive spices.
Cut the cookies out from your dough, lightly moisten with some water, and then sprinkle the cookies generously with green sanding sugar before baking.
Baking these Christmas Wreath Cookies lightly melts the sugar crystals on top giving them a beautiful, almost glitter-like finish.
To turn your Chiristmas Wreath Cookies into edible decorations, simply add a small hole using a skewer before baking. Then tie on a pretty red ribbon, and hang from the tree.
Let your imagination run wild and make these Christmas sugar cookies in all different holiday shapes. I love this giant pack of Christmas cookie cutters for getting creative.
I made some red Christmas ornament shaped cookies to go along with my Christmas wreath cookies!
These Christmas Wreath Cookies would make a great project to work on with your kids over the holiday break.
You'll end up with sugar crystals everywhere. But it will be totally worth it!

Recipe
Ingredients
- 2 ⅓ cups all purpose flour 350g
- ¾ cup self raising flour 100g
- ½ cup sugar 125g
- 2 ½ sticks butter 125g
- ½ cup molasses 125g, or golden syrup
- 1 egg large, lightly beaten
- 1 tsp ginger ground
- 2 tsp allspice
- ½ tsp cloves ground
- ⅔ cup green sanding sugar 100g
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.
- Sift the flours together into a large mixing bowl of an electric mixer and add the sugar and spices. Add the butter and mix using a paddle attachment until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs.
- Add the egg and molasses and mix until combined and the mixture starts to form into a ball.
- Line your kitchen counter with non stick baking paper and turn out the mixture onto the paper.
- Roll out the dough until approximately 5mm thick. If you don't have a wreath cookie cutter, like I didn't, use a fluted circular cookie cutter and then a shot glass to cut out the center of each cookie.
- Once you have cut out the cookies, working one at a time, lightly moisten the top of the cookie with water and then sprinkle generously with the sanding sugar. Place on a baking tray lined with baking paper while you sugar the remaining cookies.
- Bake for 14 minutes.

I love the idea of adding the sugar before and basically baking it on. They are so pretty, love sparkly things of any description. No edible decorations on our tree, our dog would have a feast (she is too clever and would get to them).

I love sparkly things of all descriptions too!!! My fiance is forever laughing at my getting distracted by sparkly things 😀

I know what you mean. It seems to be such a busy time of year, but it's also the time where I'm struggling to feel motivated. I think my brain has already kicked into holiday mode!

Katherine Martinelli says
These are just gorgeous! So interesting that you decorate them before baking, it has a great effect.
delicieux says
It does, I love how the sugar melts and sort of takes on a glitterlike look. It's so pretty. I found it worked better with brightly coloured sugars, like green and reds, rather than paler colours. 😀
