Helpful Tips for Arepas
Dip In Cold Water
Make sure before you place the dough on the plastic wrap you dip balls in the cold water. This is going to make sure it helps prevent the dough from sticking to the plastic. Otherwise, it can become messy.
Don't Overmix
Make sure to mix lightly and don't overmix or overwork the dough. Otherwise it can become a bit heavy and you won't have that light and fluffy center you want.
Variations For Arepas
Cheese
You can place a slice or two of cheese in the center of the dough so that you have cheese in the center when you bite into it.
Fried Egg
Fry up your egg as you wish and top the arepas for a tasty breakfast or lunch option.
Herbs and Seasonings
You can add in fresh herbs or seasoning to the dough if you want to flavor your dough.
Arepas FAQs
What is the best flour for arepas?
Masarepa is the best flour to use when making arepas. I used the P.A.N. brand but you are welcome to use any brand that you prefer. Just know depending on the brand you might have to adjust the water ratio if one brand soaks in the water more than another brand.
What do you eat arepas with?
You can eat arepas with anything you want. From cheese, fried egg, top with pulled pork, taco meat, shrimp, chicken salad and more. Honestly this is such a versatile pairing almost anything tastes delicious next to it.
How to store leftovers?
I like to store leftovers in the fridge in an airtight container. Then to reheat you can toss in the air fryer or oven at 375 degrees. Reheat until warmed through. Or microwave for a minute or so, until it is warmed.
Can you freeze arepas?
Yes, you can freeze leftovers. Place each arepas on a piece of parchment paper, so as you stack they don't touch each other. Freeze for 2-3 months. Then reheat in the oven, air fryer, or heat up in the microwave until warmed through.
