It’s finally summertime here in Florida, and that means it’s time to start grilling!
There’s nothing I love more for a summer lunch than a hearty black bean burger, loaded with all the fixings. That’s why I was so excited when MorningStar Farms® invited me to create a delicious recipe featuring their famous Spicy Black Bean Burgers.
And this one is topped with some of my favorite things – homemade guacamole and a slightly spicy chipotle ranch dressing.

Making the Guacamole
This homemade guacamole makes a regular appearance in my house. And here’s a little confession – this is actually my husband’s creation.
He is what you might call a guacamole connoisseur. And after a lot of taste testing, he came up with this perfect (and very simple) guacamole recipe.
To make it, start by mashing three avocados in a large bowl. Add some diced red onion, a handful of cilantro, a chopped tomato, finely chopped jalapeño, and a big squeeze of lime juice.
Mix it up, and you have a delicious homemade guacamole. It’s perfect for dipping tortilla chips or – in this case – topping burgers!
I used half a jalapeño here, but feel free to add more to increase the spice level.
Making the Chipotle Ranch Dressing
Now I LOVE ranch dressing. But I was looking for something with a bit more of a kick.
So for these veggie burgers, I whipped up this super easy Chipotle Ranch Dressing. I used yogurt as the base to keep things a little lighter.
To make it, simply blend together the plain yogurt, ranch seasoning, a bit of chipotle in adobo sauce, and a squeeze of lime juice.
Tip: You can find packets of ranch seasoning in the salad dressing aisle. And you’ll find the chipotle in adobo sauce near the Mexican food in the ethnic foods aisle.
Making the Spicy Black Bean Burgers
Now for the star of the show – the MorningStar Farms® Spicy Black Bean Burgers!
I have tried a LOT of veggie burgers in my 25+ years as a vegetarian, so you can trust me when I tell you these are very tasty.
They make a great plant-based alternative to traditional burgers. Even my meat-eating husband approves! We almost always have a pack in our freezer.
In fact, we keep a lot of MorningStar Farms® products on hand. My son absolutely loves the Veggie Bacon Strips and asks for them almost every morning.
You can find these Spicy Black Bean Burgers in the frozen aisle at your grocery store. I got mine at Publix! (And they’re on sale too – click here to check out the savings.)
Since the weather is perfect right now, I went ahead and grilled my veggie burgers. Just heat up the grill and cook for 2-3 minutes on each side. The timing will vary depending on how hot your grill is, of course, so keep an eye on them.
And don’t forget to toast the buns too! They’re just so much better with a little crunch. I just toss them on the grill next to my burgers for a minute or two.
Putting it all Together
The final step is to put those burgers together.
Simply layer each bun with your veggie burger, a big scoop of guacamole, and a drizzle of homemade chipotle ranch dressing.
How easy is that?
Feel free to experiment with adding your own extra toppings – lettuce, grilled mushrooms, or ripe tomatoes would all be delicious.

Happy grilling!
