Menu Plan Monday – 5/23

By Kiersten | Last Updated: December 25, 2011

We’re moving on Friday, so this week we’re getting a lot of take-out. At first, it’s fun, but then I inevitably start craving home cooking. I can’t wait to hit up the farmer’s market and cook with fresh veggies again!

Last week’s big winner was the Smoked Cheddar Twice-Baked Potatoes. I wanted to make something easy, filling, and full of veggies, so these potatoes were perfect. We had smoked cheddar on hand, so I used that (and wow, was it good!), but you can really use whatever you like. I prefer to use strongly flavored cheeses on baked potatoes because you can get away with using less.

So onto this week’s meal plan! I was almost going to skip posting this week, but I thought it would be fun to write about the restaurants we’re going to, which are some of our favorites in Madison.

Monday: Ha Long Bay
This restaurant serves Vietnamese and Thai food–you’d think that it would be hard to do both well, but this is seriously the best Thai restaurant we’ve ever been to.

Tuesday: Leftover Ha Long Bay
Yay, leftovers!

Wednesday: Pizza Brutta
Pizza Brutta makes authentic Neapolitan pizza cooked over a wood fire and it is so good. I really hope there’s someplace like this in Raleigh. My favorite pizza is the Portabella, but they used to have the most amazing potato pizza. I was a sad panda when they took that off the menu.

Thursday: Monty’s Blue Plate Diner
Surprisingly, there’s only one restaurant in Madison that only makes vegetarian food. But on the bright side, there are a lot of restaurants that serve meat and also really innovative veggie dishes. Monty’s Blue Plate Diner is among my favorites because their vegetarian options go way beyond the standard veggie burger and mac & cheese. I will be getting the Meatless Meatloaf of the Gods, which is made with carrots, onions, and mushrooms and served with mashed potatoes and cashew gravy. Afterwards, we plan on popping over to Gail Ambrosius Chocolates (as seen on Food Network!) and getting a few truffles.

Friday: PB&J on the road
We’re hoping to be on our way to Raleigh at 4am on Friday. We’ll have our 4 cats in tow, so we’ve decided that rather than stopping for fast food, we’ll bring sandwiches and eat at rest stops–that way, we won’t have to leave the cats alone.

Saturday: Going out to eat… somewhere
The movers will be bringing our stuff in the morning, but I’m sure we won’t be ready to cook quite yet.

Sunday: Going out to eat… again
Either that or we’ll pick something up from Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s.

Agh.. Friday! You must be super excited!!! Send me your new address when you have a minute. 🙂

Potato pizza= YUM. I should really make a mashed potato pizza on my own. I only had it once and absolutely loved it.

Wow! Good luck with your move! I hope you and the kitties have a peaceful ride.

It's nice that you get to say goodbye to your favorite restaurants before you go. Home cooking will move with you! I know what you mean about how it's fun at first to eat take-out but then it starts to get really old. Everything feels just a little too heavy and greasy, and the ratio of veggies to other stuff is so much lower in restaurant food than it is when I cook at home.

Meatless Meatloaf of the Gods sounds fabulous. I hope Raleigh is full of vegetarian treats for you, too!

I moved from Raleigh about a year ago!! There are tons of awesome things to do there, and don't forget Greensboro right down the road! I went to a small school in Burlington (45 minutes down 40/85 towards Greensboro and then another 25-30 or so from Burlington to Greensboro! There are tons of Vegetarian Restaraunts, I will be sure to call my Veggie-bestie who still lives there and ask for some of her favorite places to eat. She took me to such great places i contemplated becoming a veggetarian with her but we all know my green staple Is Mountain Dew and green M&Ms 🙂 good luck on your move as well! The kitties will do surprisingly well i bet, mine surprised me from Raleigh to Florida! Good luck and stay safe!!!
