This may come as a shock to you (so brace yourselves!), but I do a lot of cooking. A lot. Two of my favorite ingredients to cook with are garlic and onions. I can’t think of many cuisines that don’t make liberal use of at least one of the two and it often seems like I’m using one (or both) of them almost every day of the week. And although I love the smell of onions sauteing on the stove and freshly minced garlic, I’m not too crazy about having the smell on my hands for hours afterwards. It seems like nothing can get that smell out, right?
When one of my readers emailed me about a solution to this cooking dilemma, I was interested. You may know Alicia from her blog, Eco Friendly Homemaking. She and her husband also have their own soap company, Eco Natural Soap, and they have a bar of soap just for us cooks–the Chef’s Friend Bar. It’s made with high grade organic coffee and it eliminates odors like fish (not a problem for this cook, thankfully!), onions, and garlic. When washing your hands with this soap, the smell is immediately diminished and after 15 minutes, any stinky food smell will have disappeared entirely. Alicia offered to send me a bar of Chef’s Friend soap, along with a few other samples, for me to review.
So does the Chef’s Friend Bar work? Yes, it does! I stationed the bar at the kitchen sink and used it after handling onions or garlic and it really did lift the odor right off my hands. When I found out that it contained coffee, I figured that it would take out the smell of onion and garlic by masking it with the strong scent of coffee, but that’s not the case. And I found another great use for this bar too–just about all of my wood cutting boards smell like onions and scrubbing them with this soap helped reduce the odor (although it didn’t take it away entirely–I guess the onion juices have really soaked into the wood). I’m hoping this means that the next time we’re cutting cantaloupe or watermelon, it won’t end up tasting like onions too. Because that’s just gross.
In addition to the Chef’s Friend Bar, I had the chance to sample the Citrus Sunrise soap and body balm, the Coconut Milk and Honey Moisturizer Bar, and Eco Natural Lip Relief balms (my favorite was the Key Lime Pie–oh, I love lime!). With winter comes dry air and with dry air comes dry skin, so I appreciated the nourishing (and moisturizing!) ingredients in all of these products. And not only are they nourishing, but they smell amazing too. I have a strong dislike for perfume-y smells and what I love about these scents is that they’re clean, fruity, and natural rather than being overpowering and fake.
It’s important to me to purchase bath and body products that are all natural–I don’t like the idea of slathering strange (and potentially dangerous) chemicals on my body. Eco Natural Soap was born out of a desire to provide safe, natural personal care products that still manage to be affordable–rather than using harsh additives or synthetic ingredients, Eco Natural Soap harnesses the natural properties of herbs, fruit, and other plant ingredients to deliver the same results. This is the kind of small business that deserves our support!
